ARM receives ADECA award for waste-free extraction of critical minerals from electric arc furnace dust
American Renewable Metals has received an award from the Alabama Research and Development Enhancement Fund, administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, to develop waste-free extraction of critical minerals from electric arc furnace dust.
Electric arc furnace dust is captured from the emissions control systems of steel mills that melt scrap. It is produced in large volumes by domestic steelmaking, it is classified as hazardous waste, and it carries a meaningful load of recoverable metals. Today, handling it is a cost line. The question this award addresses is whether it can instead be a feedstock.
Why this stream, and why now
ARM’s platform is feedstock agnostic once metals are transferred into solution. That property is what makes moving between waste streams tractable: the front-end leaching chemistry is tuned to the material, but the continuous ion exchange and simulated moving bed chromatography train behind it does not need to be rebuilt for every new source.
EAF dust is a natural next target for that capability. It is generated continuously, it is already collected and contained, and it sits inside an industry Alabama has in depth.
What “waste-free” means here
Conventional hydrometallurgical routes tend to trade one waste problem for another, generating solvent and raffinate streams that then need their own disposal path. ARM’s process runs as a closed loop, recovering reagents and process water rather than discharging them.
The objective is not simply to pull metals out of the dust. It is to do so without creating a second waste stream behind it.
Where it fits
This is ARM’s second consecutive ADECA award, following 2025 work on unlocking the critical minerals potential of Alabama coal ash. Both extend a platform first proven on coal mining waste under a 2019 Department of Energy award, and both keep the resulting capability — and the resulting supply — inside the state.
